Has Anyone Ever Helped Me in an Emergency?

This is what happened yesterday. Aaron arrived bright and early to begin the work on a general repair of my front steps, including building a frame over the old ones and pouring cement onto the frame.

During the process of doing this he had to turn off a valve connected to the water supply in the house and in the process of doing that it started to leak. He tried to stop the leak which became worse and water flew out of it all over my finally DRY cellar! He turned off the water to the house and then rushed up to tell me that we needed a plumber — QUICK!! I had just come into the house after picking blueberries and was really startled by all of this. Aaron got on his cell phone to call his plumber but had to leave a message. I went into the house and got on my old-fashioned desk phone to call my plumber Ron from Eagle Plumbing. I left a message likewise. It wasn’t long before Ron called back and said that he could come over as he lives in town over by the golf course. In the meantime, Aaron is waiting for the lumber company to bring the cement and lumber promised between 9:30–10:00 am. No truck. Aaron started doing a few odd jobs here that needed work. Anyhow, Ron arrived and Aaron could show him exactly what needed doing. I am SO thankful that if this valve had to break that it happened when it did. Otherwise I could have had another cellar full of water by the time I figured out what to do or when I wasn’t even here! Ron did the work and as he was working I remembered a promise I made to him several years ago that I would give him some Oriental Poppies. There are two groups of them here now but under the circumstances and the time of year I thought better of it. He did remember the promise, though so I had to make good on this in the fall.

The lumber truck came and Aaron got started at about 11:30 am. I went to the Post Office but could see darkness all over the sky to the West and knew a storm was coming as verified on TV. So we hurriedly got everyone under cover or in the truck and Aaron left just in time to escape the deluge and the thunderstorm. That is one good feature down here that these storms are usually short-lived. Not like on the mainland where they always seemed stronger and lasting longer over more land, I suppose. But we got some much needed rain.

So we will be starting over again today and I hope that the steps can be poured and the cement set. Talk about emergencies.
